Phantom Blade Zero Weapon System: Types, Swapping & Upgrades

How Phantom Blade Zero's weapons work: the three weapon classes, why swapping refills Sha-Chi, upgrade thresholds, Reforge, and Soul Temper forms.

What weapon classes are there?

Soul carries two main weapons at once, freely swapped mid-combo, drawn from 30+ weapons in three broad classes:

Class Character
One-handed Balanced speed and power; the all-rounder profile
Two-handed Slow, heavy hits with strong guard-break pressure
Dual-wield Fast, long chains; weaker individual hits, relentless pressure

Every weapon has its own normal combos, Sha-Chi combos, unique traits, and a signature Power Surge technique.

Why is swapping weapons the key mechanic?

Because swapping instantly refills your Sha-Chi — on a cooldown of roughly five seconds, shortenable through skills. Offense drains the bar, the swap restores it, and the change of moveset keeps pressure on. Playing one weapon only is leaving your best resource tool unused; pairing a heavy breaker with a fast chain weapon covers both sides of the combat system.

How do upgrades work?

  • Weapon upgrades raise damage, status, and guard break, and unlock new skills at key thresholds (5 / 10 / 15 / 25).
  • Reforge rolls a weapon back and returns your materials — free early on, later costing an item per level refunded. Experimentation is cheap.
  • Soul Temper (unlocked by talking to Myst) gives each weapon a bespoke enhancement with unique materials — and a few weapons change into entirely new forms, with altered effects. Treat those transformations as hidden upgrades worth hunting materials for.
