Phantom Blade Zero Beginner's Guide: 10 Things to Know First
Start Phantom Blade Zero right: how Bells work, what Remnant Dust is, why combat rewards aggression, and how to spend Soul's 66 days wisely.
Who am I and what am I doing?
You play Soul (魂), a master swordsman whose heart has been fatally wounded — he has 66 days left to live. Rather than wait for death, Soul draws his blade against the conspiracy that destroyed him, cutting through assassins, monsters, and the strange machinery of a martial world in chaos. The story plays out across eight hand-painted, ink-wash regions joined seamlessly — semi-open maps with branching routes, neither a single corridor nor a true open world.

What are Bells?
Bells are the backbone of the whole game. Resting at one:
- Restores your health, elixirs, and Phantom Edge charges
- Acts as your respawn point and fast-travel node
- Opens the upgrade, store, and ability-training menus
- Reveals the nearby map the first time you touch it
- Offers an explicit Save option — you can hard-save your progress
Death sends you back to the last bell you touched. Defeated normal enemies stay dead when you rest, so the world slowly clears as you push forward.
What should I do first?
- Follow the opening until you unlock your first bell, then spend a minute reading its menu — everything important lives there.
- Learn the color language of attacks early: blue can be parried, red must be dodged, dark attacks drain your Sha-Chi — the combat guide explains all of it.
- Grab every collectible you pass. Black Stones, Sha-Chi Ambers, and Memory Blossoms are permanent power — see the progression guide.
- Talk to NPCs with purple side-quest icons promptly: those quests expire, and they feed the true ending (covered in length & endings).
Do enemies respawn?
No — at least not from resting. Enemies you kill stay dead when you rest or respawn at a bell, so you can’t farm the same pack for currency. Resources come from exploration, and the game is balanced around that. If a route feels rich, take the detour.
How long is the game?
A straight main-story run runs about 20–25 hours; a full playthrough with side content lands around 25–40, and completionists can finish nearly everything in a single run. Details and the 8 endings live in the length & endings guide.
