Phantom Blade Zero Combat System Explained: Sha-Chi, Parry & Ghoststep

Master Phantom Blade Zero's combat: what the Sha-Chi bar does, how blue/red/dark attacks work, and why weapon swapping is your best defensive tool.

What is Sha-Chi?

Sha-Chi (杀气) is the yellow bar under your health — and it does three jobs at once:

  • Stamina: holding guard and getting blocked drains it
  • Guard meter: when either side’s Sha-Chi empties, that side is Guard-Broken and open to a high-damage punish
  • Skill resource: your Sha-Chi combos and special techniques spend it

Normal attacks and sprints are free. Everything defensive or flashy draws from the same pool, so running empty means losing both your offense and your guard.

Soul parries a glowing blue strike, sparks scattering across a rain-slick rooftop

How do I read enemy attacks?

Enemy techniques come in three colors, and the color tells you the answer:

Color Meaning Your answer
Blue (Brutal Move) Heavy, parryable strike Parry — a perfect parry costs nothing and triggers Ghoststep; turtling behind your guard bleeds Sha-Chi fast
Red (Killer Move) Unblockable Dodge — perfect dodging also triggers Ghoststep
Dark/gray Sha-Chi-draining technique Disengage — these drain or empty your Sha-Chi; most guides treat them as attacks you avoid rather than answer

What is Ghoststep?

Ghoststep is the reward for perfect defense: Soul teleports behind the attacker, opening a backstab or combo window and refunding part of your Sha-Chi. Both a perfect parry (against blue) and a perfect dodge (against red) can trigger it. It converts a defensive read into your strongest offensive position.

What are Power Surges and executions?

  • Power Surge (L2) spends the Surges you build during combat for a high-damage strike that ignores defense. Its animation grants invulnerability.
  • Executions on weakened or Guard-Broken enemies also give i-frames — and refill your Sha-Chi, making them part of your economy, not just a finisher.

Why do I carry two weapons?

You equip two main weapons and swap between them instantly — and swapping refills your Sha-Chi, on a cooldown of roughly five seconds (skills can shorten it). When your bar runs dry mid-fight, the swap is your engine: refill, change your moveset, keep attacking. This is why S-GAME calls the design offense-first — the resource loop pushes you forward, not back. Weapon choice and the full arsenal live in the weapons guide, and the tools that double as exploration keys are covered under Phantom Edges.
